Cool or Crap?
Today Elliott and I were wondering around downtown looking for pictures, when a scalper informed us there was a UK game today. On a whim we decided to go shoot it since we weren’t having much luck finding pictures. I was really not in the mood to shoot arm pit pictures (although i did come away with some). For a good portion of the game I was experimenting with shooting either really wide or really tight. I actually used my new fixed 35mm from santa clause for a lot of it. I’m not sure if I ended up with cool pictures or a bunch of crap to wipe my butt with. Seriously, let me know what you think. I think a lot of them are almosts’ that I can nail down over time, and perhaps at a high-school game or something.
I really wish that guys hand was up a little further for better separation with the guy on the far right.
Click on the two above and let me know which one you like better… I couldn’t decide. I feel like the body language in the first is more telling, but i like the hand on the sleeve in the second.
The reason the above is in black and white is because there was a bright red Toyota ad that I could not get around, distracting from the girl with the rabbit.
Apologies for the overwhelming amount of photos, but (1) I am really terrible at editing sports, and (2) I really wanted feedback so I thought that maybe If I engulfed you in photos It would convince people to respond.
Parting thought; If all you’re looking for is pictures you’ve already seen, then that is all you will come away with.

I like the first frame. The second frame would work better if you flashed the lay up and only exposed for it. Get rid of the back ground and keep the rim light on the goal. The third photo is out. No good expressions. I see what you’re going for. But since it’s not working here, your picture was in the top right. But if you keep shooting this wide and low spill you’re going to get the picture eventually.
Fast forward to Jodie Meeks scrapping. The second one is better. The hand pulling back makes it clear this is a near scrap. Meeks’ expression is good enough to make it 100 percent. Pic of ref is OK. It’d be better with some roughing in the background. Maybe watch for that next time.
That toyota sign is still really ugly and distracting. This picture doesn’t work. You would have needed to be way to the left looking at her to get rid of those ugly signs. This is a toyota commercial to me.
The only way this free throw shot works is if you have something better than the one in the background. Get tighter too. We don’t need all that context. I know what a basketball goal looks like. Chances are you could lose some of that and possibly all of that player (I know you don’t have a 300 2.8 right?)
If this dude in the lights was famous, I would say you have a good picture. Otherwise he’s just, meh.
I appreciate that you didn’t load up a bunch of lame action. I also commend your effort on shooting though. I wonder how many of our pals are.
Love,

cleanliness is next to godliness when it comes to sports most of the time. there are always wonderful exceptions to every rule. i like the second frame for the secondary layer of the jumbo screen. all too often in sports the action takes place on one plane and the rest of the frame is boring. this works when the action is great, but you are looking at the ordinary from a different angle and this mentality will produce extraordinary results in due time. with all the hype about layering i don’t think the third shot works. too much body on the floor cluttering the frame. i’m also a sucker for a face and we don’t really get one. the subtle B.L. or the players in the photo with the ball prominent in the frame makes it work for me. it’s quiet, but it still conveys a mood. all-in-all it’s awesome that you’re taking chances. those who risk, win.

I want to shoot some sports, too. Let’s go shoot a high school game or two together. You went to Henry Clay, right? We could always shoot a Henry Clay vs. Lafayette game for fun! :)
