Looking Back
I had the pleasure of spending 4 wonderful days with Faye and George Anderson in Hazard, Kentucky this past week. They taught me about life, how things have changed, and how to have a fulfilling future. They welcomed me with open arms and restored my faith in the goodness of people and the realness of love that can and will last forever.
They taught me that not all good journalism has to be in the middle of a warzone, and to get a good story you don’t always have to drive 800 miles and get pepper sprayed. Good stories require work and attention to detail, whether thats in the middle of Antarctica or in an 80- year- old’s living room that smells like cornbread and potpourri.
At the end of Picture Kentucky, they thanked me for taking an interest in their lives. “I aint nothing special.” Faye had told me. But she thanked me for caring about their story, their past, and their future. But honestly, I should have been the one thanking them.
Picture Kentucky
I saw the last of the Eastern Kentucky mountains about an hour ago as I crept back home going precisely the speed limit. I’ve had enough legal run ins this past month to last me for awhile. And my wallet hurts.
The 2008 Hazard, Ky workshop was a little different in that I only shot pictures twice. I shot video instead and I actually grew to like it and appreciate its value in our industry.
Overall it was an awesome experience, Heres a feature I shot during the short time me and my still camera had together.

So I got my gear back today from police. It was better than christmas, and thankfully all my images were still there. I didn’t shoot as well as I would have hoped for the whole ordeal that I went through with it all, but it was definitly character building, and an awesome learning experience for next time; and sometimes thats more valuable than just getting good photos. Some things money cannot buy, and some learning experiences just cannot be replaced.
