The Big Day
“Well…*grumble grumble* No matter WHAT happens tonight, when I wake up tomorrow… I’ll be in a different country.” I overheard the old-men behind me talking over beers as they watching the poll results coming in; and his comment, although said mostly down the beaten path of drunkenness, just rung so true in my ears. Today I woke up and I felt it, I’m in a different country.
I survived election day. It’s over, done with, the reseults are in. I still can’t wrap my mind around that.
I got sent to Louisville to cover Mitch McConnell and the Republicans “partying” it up in the Galt House. Five hours and a lot of drinks later they rejoiced over Mitch McConnell’s victory, and frowned over McCain’s defeat.
When I realized that the small asian woman behind McConnell was his wife; watching the way she looked at him, the way she always stood in the same place behind his left shoulder the phrase “behind every great man, there’s an even greater woman” kept bouncing around my mind. Not saying he’s a great man, just saying.
With all that said; Politics are exhausting.
Dividing and Conquering
If I look paler today than I did a week and a half ago, Its because I haven’t left my cave down in the Kernel for much more than shooting more video, eating, using the bathroom, and occasionally sleeping. BUT, it is finished. Well the grunt work of it. And by it I mean the two online special sections I had to build within two days of each other.
The online election guide serves the purpose of showcasing all of our 2008 election coverage. Its supposed to be a resource for people looking for information on political news and even tells you where you can vote. Check it out
Basketball? UK? is that like important or something? Apparently it is. Which is why we made a whole special section previewing the season. Check it out.
If you have any questions, ask away. I am by no means in any way shape or form an expert on this yet, but I’d be happy to share any knowledge I’ve stumbled into by drowning in the world wide web.
And I just want to give everyone at the Kernel a big high-five for everything they’ve done in the past week. There’s no way I could have made any of that without everyone. I wouldn’t have awesome content to put up if it weren’t for jill and katie slaving over phone and pen for hours on end. And god knows how many pictures Allie toned; on her 21st birthday when she should have been celebrating. Eds still hunched over that interactive flash map somewhere, and god knows how many stupid question phone calls jim and brad fielded from me this past week. Go team.
The Kentucky Kernel is doing big these days. If we were “outworking the med-students” last year, I have no clue who were outworking now. And honestly, the seventy hour work weeks that we each, individually, have clocked in, are becoming completely worth it.
